I recently advanced to the second round of the NYC Midnight Drabble contest. My category was drama and I had to include the action of injuring a knee and the word “line.”

This is what I came up with.

A Walk in the Woods

Dave tripped on a root and fell hard. “God dammit.” He sprawled against a tree, clutching his knee.

Jasmine knelt beside him. “Are you okay, sweetie?”

Stupid woman. “Do I look okay?”

He gingerly stretched his leg. Pain shooting up his thigh told him he wasn’t going further. He’d have to do it here. He pulled his pack from his shoulder. His hands fumbled inside, searching for his handgun. Nothing.

A click. Jasmine held his gun. “When you’re plotting your wife’s murder, make sure she isn’t listening on the other line.” She aimed at his forehead and pulled the trigger.
